Description

Research Topic Description, including Problem Statement:

With the dominance of search engines and the World Wide Web, keyword search tends to be the primary medium used to search millions if not billions of text documents for information.  However it can be argued that this interface is too simplistic, especially when trying to figure out what is happening in an unknown business space: returning results in a list format without context makes it difficult to understand what is happening, and why; to be able to understand trends and make projections; to differentiate and understand potential significance of opinions, as well as from fact; and the results are critically dependent on entering the correct keywords, which can be difficult and time consuming without expert knowledge.  Understanding context is also important in identifying fake news articles, or potentially misleading and irrelevant topics.

Example Approaches:

Approaches could include, but are not limited to:

  • Multiple newsfeeds. The media often report on the same event, which might allow retrospective analysis validated against known results, and the use of fake news examples.

  • Use of content meta-data. Text documents are often riddled with meta-data information, which should be useful in tracking and validating content.
