Description

The Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has multiple openings for recent (within the last five years) Post-Master’s level research associates in its Environmental Data Science & Systems Group (http://www.esd.ornl.gov/edss/). The successful candidates will help link advanced informatics and computer science to data management and distribution in the Earth, climate, and environmental sciences.
The successful candidates may be involved with various software development and applied data management activities that support projects in Earth Sciences Informatics at ORNL, such as the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Archive project and other Department of Energy projects.
The position appointment is for two years, with possibility of a long term position depending on performance, mutual interest, and available funding. The salary will be competitive and the position includes benefits.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must have a Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline with a strong background in software development. Some knowledge in one or more earth sciences is advantageous. Recent graduates are preferred. Applicants cannot have received their most recent degree more than five years before the date of the application appointment and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

• Strong software development knowledge for building Web user interfaces using current tools and technologies.
• Strong background in Informatics or computer programming as applied to some type of business or engineering or scientific application.
• Strong knowledge in system design, analytics, monitoring, and performance evaluation.
• Working experience in Linux (preferred) and/or Windows servers.
• Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
• Desire to learn and adopt new tools and technologies that are required by the projects.
• Knowledge and experience in one or more programming languages such as: Java, JavaScript, Python, PHP, C, R, MatLab, SAS, IDL, Unix/Shell.

We are seeking a self-starter, willing to develop expertise in data preparation for archiving, discovery and distribution, as well as, metadata preparation and management. The following skills and experience are desirable.
• Knowledge and experience in database management and quality assessment, expertise with databases such as PostGreSQL, MySQL, Oracle or SQLServer.
• Requirements gathering and interpretation from scientific and research users

This appointment is offered through the ORNL Postgraduate Research Associates Program and is administered by ORAU through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
