Description

A postgraduate research project training opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Children’s Health Protection (OCHP), Regulatory Support and Science Policy Division (RSSPD), in Washington, DC.

The mission of EPA's Office of Children's Health Protection is to ensure EPA actions and programs further the protection of children’s environmental health. This includes addressing the potential for unique exposures, hazards, health effects, and health risks to children during the development of agency actions, regulations and policies. These efforts address children’s health as they relate to safe chemicals management, clean air, safe drinking water and other factors. The participant will be involved in various projects related to considerations focused on the incorporation of children's environmental health in EPA research, assessments, methodologies and policies.

The primary focus of this opportunity is children’s environmental health risk assessment, which includes application of research in the fields of developmental biology, as well as exposure, hazard, and dose-response assessment. With guidance from a staff mentor and other team members, the participant may be involved in the following training activities:

  • Conducting literature reviews, conducting analyses/synthesis of data, and preparing scientific text and other materials for technical reports, scientific journal articles, or other publications related to children’s environmental health. Potential topics include susceptibility in dose-response assessment, carcinogenic effects of prenatal/perinatal exposures, and endocrine disruption.
  • Interacting with EPA staff members who are addressing children’s environmental health in agency actions by conducting supporting scientific/technical reviews or analyses.
  • Providing critical scientific review of children's environmental health in risk analysis products (e.g., chemical-specific, outcome-specific, or life stage-specific assessments), including draft documents developed by EPA and products prepared by other parties relevant to children’s environmental health.

Through this training opportunity, the participant will gain experience in children’s environmental health and risk assessment, as well as an understanding of EPA’s approach to applying scientific research.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. The appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend based on level of education. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences and stakeholder venues. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.

The mentor for this project is Khesha Reed (reed.khesha@epa.gov). The desired start date for this appointment is September 18, 2017.

Qualifications

Applicants must have received a master’s or doctoral degree in public health, epidemiology, toxicology, biological or environmental sciences, or closely related discipline within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date. Knowledge of children’s environmental health and human health risk assessment including topics such as endocrine disruption and carcinogen risk assessment are desired.
