Description

A research fellowship opportunity is currently available in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH), in Washington, DC.

The ORISE Fellow will be directly involved with the Director of the Office of HIV/AIDS and Infectious Disease Policy to develop reports, talks, slides, blogs, and other materials related to the prevention, care, and treatment of HIV and viral hepatitis as well as the safety and availability of blood and tissue in the United States.

The fellow may be involved in the following activities:

  • Searching and reviewing literature, internet searches, description and analysis of HHS activities and policies, creation of static and animated slides using PowerPoint and Prezi.
  • Accompanying  the Director to key meetings with federal and non-federal stakeholders and prepare notes, identify action items, and monitor implementation of follow up activities.
  • Contributing to planning and implementing webinars for federal staff on scientific advances in HIV prevention and care.
  • Interacting with the Office of National AIDS Policy at the White House on activities related to implementing and monitoring the National HIV/AIDS Strategy.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at HHS in the Washington DC area. Participants do not become employees of HHS or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Qualifications
  • A masters or terminal-level degree in public health or a social or behavioral science. The candidate's education and experience should have prepared the individual to be involved with a broad range of issues related to the prevention, care and treatment of HIV and viral hepatitis as well as the safety and availability of blood and tissue in the United States.
  • Use and understand information in policy documents, surveillance reports, journal articles and other sources that address epidemiology, health policy, health education, health systems, medicine, and behavioral and social sciences.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage, track, and successfully complete multiple competing tasks. 
  • Very strong skills the development of written and oral communications for scientific and nonscientific audiences.
  • Experience and superior skills using Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Experience using graphic design software and Prezi preferred.
  • Prior paid, volunteer, and/or educational experience with on HIV or viral hepatitis, especially within racial or ethnic communities disproportionately affected by HIV and viral hepatitis.

Preference will be given to those with academic concentrations or other experience related to the prevention and control of infectious diseases (e.g., HIV, viral hepatitis).
