Description

A fellowship is available in the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH), Office of the Secretary (OS), at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in Rockville, MD.

OASH provides leadership to the nation on public health and science matters, and communicates on these subjects to the American people. OASH is a Staff Division in HHS that performs both policy and program roles and is led by the Assistant Secretary for Health (ASH), whose chief mission is promoting, protecting, and improving the  nation’s health. For additional information, please visit: http://www.hhs.gov/ash/.

ODPHP, strategically placed in the Office of the Secretary/Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, has been leading the alignment of disease prevention and health promotion activities across the department for more than 30 years. The resulting infrastructure of coordinated public health policy, science and communication experts makes it possible for the HHS Secretary and often, the President, to speak with the authority of a department united on disease prevention and health promotion, a major public health mandate.

The fellow will participate in all aspects of Healthy People, including implementation of the current decade’s objectives (Healthy People 2020) and the development of the next decade’s (Healthy People 2030). The fellow may have an opportunity to be involved in the following activities:

  • Collaborate with the ODPHP Community Strategies Division to plan, implement, and evaluate promotional and outreach activities for Healthy People 2020.
  • Participate in the planning for Healthy People 2030, including planning for regional meetings and formative research (e.g., in-depth interviews, survey design, focus group facilitation)
  • Participate in the synthesis, analysis, and reporting of public comments on Healthy People 2020 objectives
  • Respond to inquiries/correspondence from the public about Healthy People issues
  • Assist ODPHP Community Strategies Division in developing strategies for implementing the Healthy People 2020 objectives at the federal, state and local levels
  • Collaborate with the ODPHP Community Strategies Division to provide strategic vision in the ongoing enhancement of the Healthy People web site, including web content.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS contingent on the availability of funds for up to five years. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at HHS in the Rockville, Maryland, area. Participants do not become employees of HHS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
