Description

A research fellowship opportunity is currently available in Division of Science and Policy in the of the U.S. Surgeon General’s Office (OSG) within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in Washington, DC.

Be part of a team that is active at the intersection of public health, science and medicine, public policy, external engagement, design and digital communications.  OSG is responsible for communicating the best possible science to the public on a variety of issues, including but not limited to active living, emotional wellbeing, addiction, violence prevention, tobacco use prevention and healthy eating. 

The fellow may have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:

  • Translational researching to support OSG topic area development, including reviewing and interpreting scientific information and convening scientific subject matter experts.
  • Policy translating and author subject area briefings related to OSG campaigns and memos for Surgeon General speaking engagements.
  • Scientific writing and the opportunity to ghostwrite journal commentaries on relevant public health topics and revise through the clearance process.
  • Campaign planning and strategic thinking regarding campaign areas, with the opportunity to project manage and lead in specific campaign areas interacting with internal federal government partners and external partners.
  • Evaluating the relative advantages of the identified strategies for different target groups and types of partner actions.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at HHS in the Washington, DC area. Participants do not become employees of HHS or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Qualifications
  • A doctoral or master’s degree in public health or related field received within the last five years.  Clinical and/or volunteer experience is a plus.
    • Doctoral students currently enrolled at an accredited U.S. college or university are also encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to get involved in a fast-paced environment with quick deadlines and multi-task, and be able to handle this with grace and professionalism.
  • Exceptional writing and oral communication skills for scientific and general public audiences.
  • Mission-driven with interest in modernizing how we communicate public health information and create grassroots movements.
  • Strong analytic and research skills – familiarity with a reference manager (e.g., Endnote) and PubMed a plus.
  • Independent and proactive person that can communicate to senior team effectively.
  • Solid organizational skills, detail-oriented, and interest/experience in leading teams or project management.
