Description

The Quality Management Team (QMT) in the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) conduct quality management activities associated with food and cosmetic safety and nutrition research. This encompasses research related to the detection and/or quantitation of microbial, chemical, and radiological hazards in foods, dietary supplements and cosmetic; prevention, intervention, and control of foodborne hazards; characterization of food and cosmetics hazards as it applies to prevention or control; epidemiologic studies and foodborne illness and their associated hazards; database development and application; risk assessment, modeling, management, and communication; safety assessments of foodborne and cosmetics hazards, including toxicological studies; and economic analysis.

The training involves FDA’s regulatory research mission and the safety of the nation’s food supply.  Specifically the participant will receive hands on training in research review and evaluation and how it is applied to internal and external food safety research laboratory programs to support FDA’s foods program mission.  During the appointment the participant will observe and receive hands on training from QMT/CFSAN staff members and researchers throughout the Center and will gain an understanding of the focus of food safety research through participation in bioresearch monitoring inspection, human subject protection, and federal research integrity programs related to CFSAN’s mission to assure food safety.   The participant will be exposed to a wide variety of laboratory research program activities including principles and requirements that demonstrate attention to quality management system responsibilities.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at FDA. Participants do not become employees of FDA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
