A fellowship opportunity is currently available in Division of Science and Policy of the Office of the Surgeon General (OSG) within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in Washington, DC.
Public Health Reports (PHR), a peer-reviewed journal published on a bi-monthly basis, has been published since 1878 and is the official journal of the U.S. Public Health Service. Since 1999, PHR has been published by the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH). The Journal's contributors are on the front line of public health and they present their work in a readable and accessible format. The six regular issues produced annually offer articles in three main areas: public health practice, research, and viewpoints/commentaries.
OSG is responsible for communicating the best possible science to the public on a variety of issues, including but not limited to active living, emotional wellbeing, addiction, tobacco use prevention and healthy eating. Under the guidance of a mentor, opportunities may include:
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DHHS. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of DHHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with education level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at OASH in the Washington, DC, area. Participants do not become employees of DHHS or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
