A complete application consists of:

  • Application - The application includes questions specific to the program, proposed research facility, and proposed research plan. You must identify a DHS Center, or DHS S&T and DHS component agencies.
  • Résumé or Curriculum Vitae (CV) - The résumé or CV should include academic history, employment history, relevant experiences and publications list.
  • Letter of Reference - A letter of reference from the Department Dean, Director of Student Research or Director of Research must be uploaded as part of the application.

Description

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate Office of University Programs is offering the DHS Summer Research Experiences for Federal Service Academies to provide opportunities for faculty to conduct research at the university-based DHS University Centers of Excellence (DHS Centers), or to participate in field studies sponsored by DHS S&T and DHS component agencies. The research will be in areas of interest common to both DHS and the Department of Defense (DOD).

The research experience will be held for 4-6 weeks during the summer of 2016. DHS S&T will provide funding for travel expenses including lodging and per diem expenses up to $5,000 for participants who live more than fifty miles, one-way, from their assigned DHS Center or field study site.

Faculty from all science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines are encouraged to apply, including faculty in agricultural sciences, biological/life sciences, computer and information sciences, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, psychology, and social sciences.

Qualifications
  • Be a full-time faculty member from one of the following Federal Service Academies at the time of application:
    • United States Military Academy - West Point, New York
    • United States Naval Academy - Annapolis, Maryland
    • United States Coast Guard Academy - New London, Connecticut
    • United States Merchant Marine Academy - Kings Point, New York
    • United States Air Force Academy - Colorado Springs, Colorado
  • Teach a discipline related to a DHS Research Area.
  • Have United States (U.S) citizenship by the application deadline. Evidence of U.S. citizenship (such as a photocopy of a U.S. passport, birth certificate, Certificate of U.S. Naturalization, or Certificate of U.S. Citizenship) must be submitted to ORISE at the time the award is accepted.
  • Be available to participate in the program for 4-6 consecutive weeks, full-time on-site at the DHS Center or field research site.
  • Have coverage under a health insurance plan before arriving at the appointment site and maintenance of coverage during the appointment.
