Description

Postdoctoral research opportunities become available routinely at various facilities with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS).  Through these opportunities, participants will develop advanced skills in agricultural related research.  Participants will interact closely with research scientists that are currently conducting research in Animal Production and Protection.

The Animal Production and Protection research seeks to improve the health, well-being, and efficiency of livestock, poultry, and aquatic food animals to ensure a productive and save food supply.  Emphasis is placed on:

  • Germplasm characterization
  • Improvement and conservation
  • Understanding the mechanisms of disease resistance
  • Development of tools to prevent, control or eradicate diseases that threaten our food supply or public health
  • Identify and develop sustainable systems for production of high quality meat, milk, and eggs

Specific research areas include:

  • Food Animal Production
  • Animal Health
  • Veterinary Medical and Urban Entomology
  • Aquaculture

Research opportunities are full-time for normally one year and may be renewed for up to four additional years upon recommendation of the ARS and are contingent on the availability of funds. The selected applicant will receive a stipend as support for their living and other expenses during this appointment. Stipend rates are determined by ARS officials, and are based on the applicant’s academic and professional background. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The participant does not become an employee of ARS or ORISE.

Opportunities may be available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.

This is an equal opportunity program open to all qualified individuals without regard to race, color, age, sex, religion, national origin, mental or physical disability, genetic information, sexual orientation, or covered veteran’s status.
