ARS Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is available within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), with the Midwest Climate Hub housed in the National Laboratory for the Agriculture and the Environment located in Ames, IA.
The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific in-house research agency with a mission to find solutions to agricultural problems that affect Americans every day from field to table. ARS will deliver cutting-edge, scientific tools and innovative solutions for American farmers, producers, industry, and communities to support the nourishment and well-being of all people; sustain our nation’s agroecosystems and natural resources; and ensure the economic competitiveness and excellence of our agriculture. The vision of the agency is to provide global leadership in agricultural discoveries through scientific excellence.
Research Project: The role of the Midwest Climate Hub is to help develop and deliver information and practices to help agriculture adapt to and mitigate a varying and changing climate. Part of this effort is developing understanding of Climate Smart practices that mitigate GHGs and climate change through the hub and collaborating with partners. The hub works with a wide variety of federal, state and land-grant partners to develop and share information about climate and agricultural issues over a wide range of time scales. The USDA Long Term Agro-ecological Research (LTAR) network is discovering new information about greenhouse gas measurements, long term cropping affects and issues related to Climate Smart Agriculture. The candidate will have the opportunity to participate within a rapidly growing climate hub learning from and collaborating with partners to help discover more information about climate change issues changing management practices across a variety of cropping systems in the Midwest. Project activities will include supporting research on understanding the interactions of climate, agriculture and management practices by connecting with LTAR research in these areas.
Learning Objectives: The candidate will have the opportunity to learn about cropping, management, climate smart agriculture in Midwestern agricultural systems and the impacts of climate change on these systems. The candidate will partner with the USDA Climate Hubs and USDA Long Term Agro-ecological Research (LTAR) network to analyze and summarize LTAR data and research results about various Midwestern management practices and their climate interactions. They will gain experience in data analysis, reviewing research and creating publications and outreach materials for a variety of audiences. Information created during the appointment will feed into the growing assessment about Climate Smart practices in the Midwest and be incorporated in Climate Hub materials and shared with partners in the region.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for 7.5 months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Health Insurance Supplement will be offered to defray the cost of health insurance coverage.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and ARS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, ARS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
