ARS Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS) located in Beltsville, Maryland.
The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific in-house research agency with a mission to find solutions to agricultural problems that affect Americans every day from field to table. ARS will deliver cutting-edge, scientific tools and innovative solutions for American farmers, producers, industry, and communities to support the nourishment and well-being of all people; sustain our nation’s agroecosystems and natural resources; and ensure the economic competitiveness and excellence of our agriculture. The vision of the agency is to provide global leadership in agricultural discoveries through scientific excellence.
Research Project: This project will support and promote the vision and goals of the Beltsville supergrade committee for agricultural science and the engineering enterprise. The emphasis will be on broad areas with high visibility based on ARS priorities, including food and water security, antimicrobial resistance, One Health initiatives, sustainable intensification of agricultural production and climate change. The fellow will join members of the ARS committee to develop plans for new initiatives across these diverse areas of research. Our aim to organize applications that propose novel scientific research initiatives that address science, policy, and societal challenges.
Learning Objectives: The Fellow will be involved with discussions and writing efforts for initiatives leading to funding of interdisciplinary research at Beltsville. This research will raise awareness of innovations and potential needs in agricultural enterprises of diverse scales, e.g., “smart farming,” novel foods, swarm crop monitoring and tending, proximal sensing, high-resolution remote sensing, gene editing, genomics, and biotechnology. The Fellow will help Committee members to develop several unique initiatives and write grants for long-term research prospects addressing agricultural needs related to climate change and associated environmental and societal trends. This research will keep abreast of agricultural management guidance and best practices established internationally and nationally, including agribusinesses, large retailers, as well as producer and consumer communities. The Fellow will maintain the “Agricultural Science Tomorrow” supergrade seminar series and will collaborate with Committee members to summarize resultant white papers. As a team, the ARS committee and fellow will determine specific needs and lead organization and writing of research grant applications.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: As soon as a qualified candidate is identified. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant(s) will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and ARS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, ARS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
