The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is offering a post master's fellowship at the Natick, Massachusetts facility.

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to primarily focus on evaluating injury and performance in the military.

You will support projects along with a multidisciplinary team of epidemiologists, statisticians and Army personnel using big data from the Soldier Performance and Health Database (SPHERE) in order to perform analyses, interpretation and reporting of results from this population level observational/clinical dataset.

  • Partake in the design, development and use of statistical and epidemiological approaches for research studies and program evaluation and assist in analyses and interpretation of analytic output.

What is the anticipated start date?

USARIEM is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length? 

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits? 

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About USARIEM

USARIEM is an internationally recognized research center of excellence for Warfighter performance science and its useful applications. The 50-year old+ Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, health, performance and nutrition research. Research studies are conducted by scientists from four research divisions, working in concert with one another, as well as in collaboration with other world-class scientists from government, industry and academia. Research divisions are: Biophysics & Biomedical Modeling (BBMD), Military Nutrition (MND), Military Performance (MPD), Thermal & Mountain Medicine (TMMD). 

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have a masters degree in public health, epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, or a relevant field, or will have received the degree by June 30, 2021. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date. U.S. military veterans who have been honorably discharged (or who have been medically discharged because of a service-connected disability) and who received a masters degree within ten years of the desired start date are also eligible.

Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:

  • Experience in using descriptive and analytical statistics including parametric and nonparametric tests and cross sectional and longitudinal statistical modeling for ecologic, cohort, and case control studies with a specific focus in occupational settings.  
  • Experience in applying traditional and novel statistical and epidemiological methods to analyze relations between risk factors and health outcomes, including time to event analyses, prediction modeling and absolute risk modeling.
  • Proficiency in SAS programming language is essential.
  • Experience with R programming language and SPSS in general is preferred.
  • Experience communicating with scientific collaborators and writing scientific reports.
  • Experience in using electronic health records (ICD-9/10 codes) for research purposes is preferred.
  • Experience with injury and behavioral health research studies is preferred.
