Description

Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton conducts research on environmental health effects and aerospace medicine, addressing health and performance challenges faced by service members in operational military environments.

Participate in, and collaborate with Engineering & Technical Support Services (ETSS) team on Disorientation Research Device (DRD) sub-system analysis, system state monitoring application development, life-cycle management tracking, research planning, and product improvement design. Receive hands-on mechanical engineering experience by conducting research, designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, formulating and documenting results, and designing solutions for improvements or new capabilities.

Appointment Length

This ORISE appointment is for a 4 month period.  Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by NAMRU-D. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

 

Qualifications

Undergraduate student in ABET-Accredited Mechanical Engineering Program (preferably third or fourth year). GPA 3.0+

Favorable skills:
--Solidworks or similar CAD/3D modeling experience.
--Knowledge of mechanical design & analysis, strength of materials, thermodynamics, and other fields related to the
mechanical engineering discipline.
--Familiarity with mechanical instrumentation and data collection devices such as load cells, accelerometers,
thermocouples, etc.
--Desire and ability to collaborate in various environments (hands-on, laboratory, computer based).

  • Degree: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree to be received by 12/31/2021 12:00:00 AM.
