Description

*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis.

Two research opportunities are currently available in the Office of the Surgeon General (OSG), within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) located in Washington, DC.

As the Nation’s Doctor, the Surgeon General provides Americans with the best scientific information available on how to improve their health and reduce their risk of illness and injury. The Surgeon General brings the best available scientific information to the public by issuing Surgeon General’s Advisories, Calls to Action, and Reports on critical issues and communicating directly with the public via a number of communication channels. Further information about the mission, leadership and priorities of the OSG can be found at: https://www.hhs.gov/surgeongeneral/index.html.

The selected participants will gain experience in researching critical, national health issues with a focus on women’s health including maternal morbidity and mortality. The participants will contribute to researching current and new priority areas, developing communication content with the guidance of their mentor and strengthening partnership engagement. The participants will collaborate directly with the OSG Director of Science, Policy and External Engagement and will be involved in discussions about significant health issues. The participants will also interact with public health officials and communications teams across HHS as well as other relevant government and non-government agencies.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participants will gain experience by:

  • Participating in the drafting, analyzing and reviewing of communication materials for the Surgeon General including science-based research summaries, fact sheets, infographics, and presentations
  • Collaborating with the OSG and other relevant staff on content and product development on current and new OSG priorities, including women’s health
  • Evaluating communication products and making recommendations for improvement and helping to identify additional communication products to advance OSG priorities
  • Participating in OSG workgroup meetings and contributing to workgroup members' research, engagement and communication activities

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at HHS in the Washington, DC, area. Participants do not become employees of HHS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
