Description

A fellowship opportunity is available in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, US Department of Health and Human Services, in Washington, DC.

The fellow will serve as science policy research assistant to the members of the Federal Advisory Committee, the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (PACCARB). Main activities will include supporting PACCARB members and working groups by conducting research on issues and topics related to policies and strategies surrounding antibiotic and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).  Other opportunities will include communication with federal and non-federal stakeholders AMR, in addition to drafting of reports, letters, white papers, and other forms of scientific writing. The fellow may also serve as administrative and logistical support to facilitate the operations of PACCARB including the coordination of working group meetings, both in-person and virtual. The candidate will learn about the federal policy development process and will work in a team environment in support of the operations of the PACCARB. Candidates will be provided instruction/direction by the PACCARB Designated Federal Officer and/or Committee Manager.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at HHS in the Washington, DC, area. Participants do not become employees of HHS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

**An interest in science policy research and writing, and the federal advisory committee process is required. Additional interest in communications, public outreach and the use of social media is preferred.

Completed master's or doctoral degree in human, animal, environmental health and/or infectious disease disciplines, public health, science policy, environmental science or agricultural science, earned within the past five years. 

Knowledge in writing scientific publications, policy reports, and conducting in-depth research using web-based scientific libraries and research methods is preferred.

Familiarity with the following: knowledge of SharePoint, Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook, and coordinating subject matter expert meetings and/or conference calls.

This opportunity is located in the DC Metro Area. Candidate must be a resident of this area or willing to relocate (no relocation expenses offered). Candidate must be present at the fellowship location in SW Washington, DC.
