The EPA Environmental Research and Business Support Program has an immediate opening for a full-time Watershed Modeler position with the EPA facility in Athens, GA.

What the EPA project is about

The Office of Research and Development (ORD) functions as the principal scientific component of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The Watershed Exposure Branch (WEB) in Computational Exposure Division (CED) of the National Environmental Research Laboratory (NERL) supports the mission of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by conducting process, modeling, and field research to assess the exposure risks of humans and ecosystems to natural and man-made stressors. WEB is also responsible for developing innovative software tools for evaluating water quantity and quality.  As part of this effort, the WEB is conducting a research project focusing on the development of a state-of-the-art component-based watershed modeling system which can be used to compose workflows to assess water quantity and quality as they relate to exposure.

What you will be doing

As a team member, you will work with a WEB mentor as part of a multi-disciplinary research team and provide technical support for WEB’s watershed modeling components. Your research work includes literature search, algorithm and software component development in watershed hydrology domain within the context of water quantity and water quality.

Required skills

  • Demonstrated education and/or experience in desktop and/or web-based software development in at least one of the following computer languages: Java, Python, C#, C++
  • Demonstrated education and/or experience in watershed hydrology
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Strong written, oral and electronic communication skills

How you will apply your skills

Modeling activities shall include assisting with the following:

  • Performing literature searches for the latest scientific studies in hydrology, water quality and watershed modeling;
  • Writing algorithms representing science in the domain of hydrology and watershed modeling;
  • Writing computer software coding hydrology and watershed modeling algorithms; and
  • Designing watershed modeling workflows using available web services.

Location:  This job will be located EPA’s Athens, GA facility.

Salary: Selected applicant will become temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $20.95 for hours worked.

Hours: Full-time

Travel: Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Expected start date: The position is full time and expected to begin September 2019. The initial project is through May 14, 2020, with potential optional periods.

  • Be at least 18 years of age and
  • Have earned at least a Bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or a closely related field of study field from an accredited university or college within the last 24 months and
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.
