A research training opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD)/National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL). This appointment will be served with the Systems Exposure Division (SED) in Research Triangle Park, NC.
The goal of this research project will be to learn about ways in which geospatial tool builders can maximize their usefulness for a range of stakeholders and uses. The research participant may interact with a multi-disciplinary research team to develop multimedia, instructional, and background content and surveys to maximize impact and usefulness of the EPA's Sustainable and Healthy Communities Research Program's EnviroAtlas web tool.
The research participant will be encouraged and mentored to explore and research new and innovative ways to communicate ecosystem services from environmental, economic, and public health perspectives. The research participant may be involved in the following research activities:
Developing innovative methods including surveys for gathering information about the user experience.
Conducting research with information gathered from workshop and stakeholder meetings to determine best practices for communicating the complexity and depth of EnviroAtlas to a wide range of community decision makers and other users.
Designing and developing user content based on the feedback they gather from the EnviroAtlas user community.
Researching and developing "use cases" in which EnviroAtlas data and tools are used to inform a specific on-the-ground decision.
This training opportunity will provide the research participant with skills in survey strategies for gathering input on the effectiveness of science communication and analyzing the overall impact on public response. The research participant will gain proficiency in oral communication and in developing effective written materials for educational and public outreach.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and is contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is part-time in the Research Triangle Park, NC area. Participants do not become employees of EPA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The mentor for this project will be Jessica Daniel (daniel.jessica@epa.gov). The desired start date for this appointment is September 10, 2018.
The preferred educational background for the research participant would be to possess a Master’s degree (or be currently pursuing a Doctoral or Master's degree) in environmental or public health sciences, geography, or related field.
