A research opportunity is currently available with the Health Informatics Branch, in the Division of Field Studies and Engineering (DFSE), within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Health Informatics Branch is a multidisciplinary team of approximately 50 scientists, IT and administrative specialists, and contractors. Our mission is to monitor risk factors and health outcomes of work-related illnesses, injuries and hazards within the U.S. workforce. The intent is to provide both early detection of emerging problems and continuous assessment of the magnitude and trends of job-related illnesses and hazards. Surveillance findings are used to guide prevention and intervention efforts. They are often used to establish new CDC and NIOSH public health policies, and to strengthen occupational health regulations.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the following activities related to the opioid crisis:

  • Contribute to developing new or modifying existing surveillance methods or sources for identifying workers, potential work-related risk factors, workplace intervention points, and prevention activities
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners in analyzing existing national and state-based tracking systems and other sources of surveillance data. This may include coding free text industry and occupation narratives.
  • Analyze death certificate data from the National Occupational Mortality Surveillance (NOMS) System to understand trends over time, occupations and/or industries with high outcome burdens, and characteristics of the decedents. NOMS is a population-based surveillance system and a collaborative effort between state vital statistics offices and CDC’s NIOSH and National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).
  • Contribute to public health messaging or educational materials
  • Participate in preparing manuscripts for publication in a peer-reviewed, scientific journal.
