CDC Office and Location: A postdoctoral fellowship opportunity is available in the Division of Injury Prevention (DIP), within the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: The ORISE participant will have the opportunity to train under the direction of a mentor who is the Division Associate Director for Science.  Fellow will have the opportunity to engage in scientific activities of DIP and train with subject matter experts across the Division. The ORISE participant will engage with CDC scientific, programmatic, and communications staff. 

Activities may include: 

• Developing engaging planning sessions with Teams to assess and plan science activities
• Facilitating science product coordination and outputs
• Evaluating and pursuing innovative processes to create efficiencies (e.g., automate citation searches);
• Performing bibliometric analysis on staff products (e.g., publications);
• Coordination of science moonshot activities, calendar mapping, and process evaluation
• Publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences;

Learning Objectives: Fellow will train alongside productive staff on engaging topics. Fellow will have the opportunity to touch all phases of the research process and develop skills along the research continuum.  The Division works on high burden injury topics such as suicide, drug overdose and older adult falls. In addition, the Division works on surveillance, data visualizations, economic analyses, evaluation, programming, and statistics, offering a wide range of public health core competency coverage.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: January 1, 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. 

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health). Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

• Fellow should be comfortable with literature reviews, bibliography compilation, web-searching, MS Excel/Access, and citation software (e.g., EndNote).
• Knowledge of project tracking and process evaluation preferred.
• Knowledge of statistical software (e.g., SAS, R, SPSS), epidemiology, surveillance, program evaluation, and public health preferred.
• Knowledge of novel data sources (e.g., social media) preferred.
• Knowledge of injury prevention and social science preferred.
• Program evaluation experience is preferred.
• Proficiency in conducting, interpreting, and reporting results of statistical analyses is preferred.
• Demonstrated track record of working effectively across disciplines, community environments, or agencies is preferred.
