A fellowship opportunity is available in the Division of Analysis, Research and Practice Integration (DARPI), National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The ORISE participant will have the opportunity to train under the direction of a mentor who is the Division Associate Director for Science. Fellow will have the opportunity to train in scientific activities of DARPI.
Activities may include:
reviewing/updating scientific guidance and standard operating procedures
working with staff scientists on writing, literature searches, and data analysis;
tracking OMB/IRB package submissions;
reviewing/creating science communication products (newsletters, bibliographies, progress updates);
identifying, sharing, tracking and coordinating scientific training opportunities;
updating SharePoint resources;
pursuing innovative processes to create efficiencies (e.g., automate citation searches);
sustain writing/innovation groups;
create conference calendars;
track staff outputs (e.g., publications);
identify opportunities for innovation, outreach, and new activities
Fellow will train with productive staff on engaging topics and has opportunity to touch all phases of the research process and will have the opportunity to develop skills along the research continuum. The Division works on high burden injury topics such as drug overdose, violence, and older adult falls. In addition, the Division works on surveillance, data visualizations, economic analyses, evaluation, programming, and statistics, offering a wide range of public health core competency coverage.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
Master’s degree in public health or an associated field required
Skills and experience desired, but not required:
Program evaluation experience
Knowledge in conducting, interpreting, and reporting results of statistical analyses
Ability to work effectively across disciplines, community environments, or agencies
Ability to conduct literature reviews, bibliography compilation, web-searching, MS Excel/Access, citation software (e.g., EndNote), and project tracking.
Knowledge of statistical software (e.g., SAS, R, SPSS), epidemiology, surveillance, program evaluation, and public health preferred.
Knowledge of injury prevention, social sciences, and OMB/IRB packages preferred.
