An opportunity is currently available in the Office of Health Equity, within the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The mission of the Office of Health Equity is to promote health equity (which is the absence of systematic unfair disparities in health) and reduce health disparities among populations disproportionately affected by HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis and other related conditions. OHE supports activities which aim to reduce health inequities among affected populations in NCHHSTP research, surveillance, policy, health communication, prevention and intervention programs, capacity building, and partnerships.
The selected participant will collaborate with members of the Office of Health Equity and other NCHHSTP colleagues to develop, implement and promote programmatic activities, research and policy interventions to reduce population-level disparities in the incidence, morbidity and mortality of HIV/AIDS, STDs, TB and Viral Hepatitis among groups that are disproportionately affected by these diseases. Examples of disproportionately affected populations include young adults, women, racial/ethnic minorities, persons who inject drugs, sexual and gender minorities, persons experiencing homelessness, justice-involved persons, and other populations. Examples of disparities include (but are not limited to) population-level differences in rates of infection, testing, linkage to treatment for persons diagnosed with infection, receipt of treatment, receipt of supportive services, effectiveness of treatment, death resulting from infection or other aspects of incidence, morbidity and mortality. Effective strategies will support the guiding principal of high impact prevention, which is a public health approach to disease prevention in which proven, cost-effective and scalable interventions are implemented for preventing the greatest amount of infections or for reducing disparities, given available resources. With the support of the project mentor, the participant will have the opportunity to learn how to make recommendations to senior scientists and management officials and other professionals regarding effective strategies.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in one of the relevant disciplines listed below under "Eligibility Requirements." Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
