A fellowship opportunity is available within the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) of the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
The National Environmental Public Health Tracking Program connects environmental and public health information to drive innovative, cutting-edge programs and solutions that protect and improve the health of communities across the county. We do this through the National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network, a multi-tiered, Web-based, interoperable system of data, tools, and services. We are a collaborative team of public health, data science, informatics, and communication experts developing tools and processes that support the use of data to solve public health issues. In collaboration with federal, state, and local partners, we identify priority environmental health issues, determine key surveillance questions, and evaluate the utility of existing data for answering the question and informing the issue.
The selected participant will gain experience in the Tracking Program by providing critical support for (1) the maintenance and expansion of the Tracking Network (http://ephtracking.cdc.gov) and (2) the use and dissemination of these data to support public health actions. The participant will be involved with the Science Development and Informatics teams in the:
The participant will learn how to apply epidemiology and environmental health science within a data science and informatics program. The participant will collaborate with other scientists to analyze health and environmental data. The participant will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team, engage in both group and independent assignments, and contribute to both routine and exploratory projects.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
