CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available in the Nutrition Branch, Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO), within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The CDC is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: This project will provide training in the area of domestic US maternal, infant and young child nutrition, including breastfeeding, complementary feeding, micronutrients, and the development of healthy dietary patterns. The research participant will collaborate with others to identify research and surveillance gaps and translate the science into products aimed at improving maternal and child nutrition.

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, this training opportunity includes:

  • Analyzing data and developing translation products on infant and young child nutrition.
  • Analyzing data and contributing to manuscripts on key topics related to infant and young child nutrition; reviewing data for indicators to be included in DNPAO’s interactive data portal.
  • Focused learning on gestational weight gain, breastfeeding, complementary feeding, micronutrient status, and the establishment of healthy dietary patterns that will help inform the development of a comprehensive DNPAO strategic plan on maternal and child nutrition.
  • Participating in interdisciplinary work groups and interacting with experts including public health nutritionists, health education specialists, evaluation specialists, maternal and pediatric health care providers, and epidemiologists.
  • Building public health skills in research, translation, and dissemination of evidence on social, environmental, and policy factors related to maternal, infant and child nutrition. The majority of the research focuses on birth through two years of age

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: July 1, 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. There will be a 75% health insurance allowance for the participant to either obtain new or offset their direct costs for existing health insurance. There will be no relocation allowances.

Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Epidemiology, Nutrition, Statistics, Public Health), or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by December 31, 2022. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred Skills:

  • Concentration in human nutrition, infant and child feeding, epidemiology, maternal and child health, or a similar public health discipline 
  • Knowledge with policy, systems, or environmental change approaches, as well as training or experience in at least one of the following topics: infant and child feeding, nutrition, and/or obesity
  • Experience conducting statistical analyses with statistical software systems such as SAS, SPSS, Stata, or R 
  • Experience in coursework covering topics such as epidemiology, statistics, basic nutrition, and/or maternal and child health
