Description

*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis.

A research opportunity is currently available with the Office of the Director, in the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO), within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

A healthy diet and physical activity are key behaviors that contribute to reducing the risk for obesity and other chronic diseases.  A critical component of a public health response to address these behaviors is surveillance.  Surveillance is used to track the behaviors as well as their environmental and policy supports.

This project will provide training to address surveillance and research issues related to nutrition, physical activity, and obesity in a public health setting. The research participant will collaborate with others to synthesize the science, identify research and surveillance gaps, and translate the science into public health actions for different aspects of nutrition, physical activity, and obesity across the lifespan.

Under the guidance of a mentor, this training opportunity may include:

  • Focused learning on federal surveillance and research of nutrition, physical activity, and obesity and related research and surveillance methods; analysis of surveillance or other research data; scientific manuscript writing for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Coordinating, updating, and reviewing data for indicators to be included in DNPAO's interactive data portal (a web based portal that displays surveillance data generated by the Division)
  • Teaming with science experts in the division to analyze data and develop scientific manuscripts that describe findings from this data
  • Participating in project management and strategic planning for research and surveillance projects
  • Contributing to the development of communication products related to DNPAO surveillance and research
  • Participating in the coordination of activities related to a Division surveillance working group
  • Helping identify and address surveillance needs of the DNPAO funded programs
  • Presenting findings from at least one project in a seminar or similar venue
  • Conducting systematic reviews of the scientific literature
  • Participating in interdisciplinary work groups and interacting with experts including public health nutritionists, health education specialists, evaluation specialists, health care providers, and epidemiologists

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
