A fellowship opportunity is currently available with the Physical Activity and Health Branch (PAHB) within the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity (DNPAO) in the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
PAHB is dedicated to understanding and promoting physical activity to enhance health and quality of life. PAHB is engaged in activities that include promoting, researching, and providing subject-matter expertise on physical activity and providing input, guidance and coordination for a wide range of efforts related to physical activity. PAHB’s priority is to make communities more walkable through transportation and community design planning.
Focusing on the PAHB priority, the fellow may be involved in the development of implementation guides related to grantee activities in support of physical activity. S/he will collaborate with other team members to provide technical assistance on topics such as complete streets, joint use agreements and master plans. Specific activities may include:
- Developing and delivering presentations to internal and external partners
- Collaborating with numerous federal partners, including DOT, FHWA, EPA, USDA and HUD
- Collaborating with PAPRN+ to examine bicycling and walking master plans or other strategies such as joint use agreements
- Providing technical assistance on physical activity and community design
- Assisting with manuscript development.
She or he may also be involved in synthesizing research and practice-based literature, developing webinars, ‘User Guides’ and practitioner friendly guidance materials; completing data analysis; and joining appropriate projects conducted by the Physical Activity Policy Research Network (PAPRN) such as the exploration of how the bicycle and pedestrian planning process advances the development of bicycle friendly communities. The fellow will also have the opportunity to participate in other projects within PAHB and/or DNPAO as they are identified.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will received a monthly stipend commensurate with education level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid
- A Master’s degree in urban planning or public health received within the last five years.
- Background in physical activity, nutrition or obesity is desired.
- Previous evaluation experience or experience in creating models is preferred.
