A research opportunity is currently available with Student Programs in the Epidemiology Workforce Branch (EWB), within the Division for Scientific Education and Professional Development (DSEPD) in the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Services (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, GA.
EWB provides applied epidemiology training and service programs for future public health professionals and the existing workforce. In addition to Student Programs, the branch houses the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) fellowship and Laboratory Leadership Service (LLS) fellowship.
Student Programs includes education programs and partnerships focused on attracting young people to the field of public health—from equipping K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teachers with public health knowledge and educational tools to bring back to their classrooms (such as through the CDC Science Ambassador Fellowship), to introducing medical and veterinary students to public health through experiential learning (such as through CDC’s Epidemiology Elective Program). Over the last 5 years, these programs have directly impacted over 250 student clinicians, 450 STEM teachers, and an estimated 1 million K-12 students worldwide.
The selected participant will be under the direction of the Student Programs lead, and will receive opportunities to learn from a variety of experts across the branch, including those with technical expertise in education, recruitment and marketing, evaluation, data analysis and statistics, and technical writing. Through this fellowship, the participant can expect to gain (1) skills and experience in how to coordinate multiple activities that bridge public health and education, (2) an in-depth understanding of how to teach the basic concepts of epidemiology and public health to a variety of audiences, and (3) broad exposure to the various offices and programs across CDC.
The participant will receive training in curriculum development and in a variety of skill areas while collaborating in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. The participant should expect to gain skills and experience in the following areas:
The participant will also be given the opportunity to participate in HHS and CDC training programs, including training activities with EIS and LLS, and will be expected to attend technical seminars and presentations held throughout the appointment period.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree (preferred) in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
