A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Office of the Associate Director for Communication within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

For more than 60 years, CDC has used its scientific expertise to help people throughout the world live healthier, safer, longer lives. CDC’s Center for Global Health coordinates and manages the agency’s resources and expertise to address global challenges such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, emergency and refugee health, non-communicable diseases, injuries, and more.

Research Project: The CDC CGH's Office of the Associate Director for Communication advances CGH’s global health priorities by raising the visibility of CGH’s work among key audiences, and building capacity of internal and external stakeholders and to tell CGH’s story effectively.

The ORISE Fellow will train with the CGH Office of the Associate Director for Communication (ADC) and will gain communication skills and experience.  The training participant will develop communication skills that can be applied in a variety of public health settings, including: use of plain language; writing for internal and external audiences, understanding how to develop content for various channels, and communication strategy and planning. 

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant may be engaged and trained in:

  • Developing, writing, editing, and disseminating messages, materials, talking points, presentations, fact sheets, reports, print and electronic newsletters, e-blast, web pages, and social media to rapidly to educate stakeholders, partners, the public, and other audiences about global public health programs.
  • Serving as a liaison between country-based communication staff in countries around the world and ADC office at headquarters in Atlanta, GA, and provide communication technical assistance to field staff. 
  • Serving as liaison between CGH global health programs and other CDC communication and marketing staff and external stakeholders.
  • Preparing a variety of written documents and materials for diverse audiences.
  • Conducting and managing digital media and web-based communication activities.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 1, 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
