Description

CDC Office and Location: A research fellowship is available with the Emergency Response Capacity Team (ERCT) within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

ERCT is composed of public health emergency response subject matter experts with scientific, technical, and operational experience in strengthening emergency response systems and training public health professionals. ERCT is currently providing technical support in strengthening public health emergency response systems in more than 25 countries in Africa, Latin America and Caribbean, East Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East.

Research Project: Hosted by CGH, and under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will receive training on:

  • Approaches to interest and action related to public health priorities
  • Contributing to the development of emergency response operational guidance and meeting materials
  • Developing Project management skills and technical skills in emergency response capacity
  • Participating in the development of new initiatives that contribute to improvements in public health
  • Contributing to the development of internal and external reports and other administrative level documents
  • Monitoring project performance through various internal and external performance reporting channels

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor and collaborating with various CDC stakeholders, the selected participant will have the opportunity to be trained in

1. Activities in support of outreach to global health partners to include the following:

  • Team support
  • Support data tracking along with database development and maintenance
  • Track and maintain engagement with countries and ensure action, Point of Contact (POC) and timeline associated with all countries regardless of if active or inactive

2. Track projects and/or provision of technical assistance including in a project tracker and with frequent communication with the Response Capacity Specialist (RCS) to ensure:

  • Projects are not stalled and continue to move forward
  • Ensure alignment of projects and country support with the Emergency Response Capacity Team (ERCT) standard approach of assess, design, develop, implement and eval/exercise phases
  • Organize file system for countries and projects to ensure all documents related to the country or project is accounted for and easy to find including budgets, proposals, technical documents, media, presentations, assessments, time tracking etc. and align with ERCT file systems

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: February 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and computer skills
  • Experience in or knowledge of issues in public health preparedness and response
  • International working experience in public health emergency preparedness and response
  • Proficiency in Spanish is strongly desired or other language (for example: Arabic, French, Portuguese or Russian)

  • Citizenship: LPR or U.S. Citizen
  • Degree: Master's Degree received within the last 60 months or currently pursuing.
