Description

A fellowship opportunity is currently available at the Center for Global Health, Division of Global Noncommunicable Diseases Branch (GNCDB), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The participant will be involved in activities to help convey critical public health scientific and programmatic information to a variety of target audiences through the branch and division’s internal and external communications channels, including traditional media relations, partner engagement and social media outreach. He/She will utilize numerous communications best practices to reach the target audience and communicate about key global health priorities. There may also be opportunities to assist with program communication and coordination activities in certain countries.

The fellow will have the opportunity to support GNCDB staff, including health communicators, health scientists and management on a variety of communications activities and may be involved in the following activities:

  • Conducting communications research and data tracking and developing reports documenting reach from press releases and other media outreach.
  • Translating scientific language for various audiences, and ensuring research findings are properly disseminated.
  • Writing content for the web, and information for social media channels. 
  • Consulting with branch staff and helping research, crafting and disseminating strategic messages that resonate with specific audiences, cultures, initiatives and campaigns.
  • Assuring scientific accuracy of all web and print messages and materials.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate must have received a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

  • Knowledge of web-based applications and social media.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities in a changing environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Extremely organized and detail-oriented.
