Description

A research opportunity is currently available with the Global Emergency Alert and Response Service (GEARS), Emergency Response and Recovery Branch (ERRB), within the Division of Global Health Protection (DGHP), Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The mission of GEARS is to rapidly detect, verify, and respond to global public health threats. GEARS serves as a resource for the agency and external partners.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will assist with the monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of global public health emergency alert and response activities. The participant will have the opportunity to learn about and gain hands-on experience in the following activities:

  • Supporting quantitative and qualitative data collection, entry, management, and analysis to improve global public health emergency response activities
  • Improving data integration from multiple sources to ensure consistent and rapid information sharing or use in decision-making
  • Developing plans, procedures, and tools for more streamlined monitoring, evaluation, and reporting
  • Gathering requirements for developing database applications by documenting end-user needs and communicating with IT system developers
  • Contributing to the preparation of reports, presentations, training and communication materials on global public health emergency alert and response
  • Enhancing professional growth and development by participating in trainings, workshops, and meetings on global public health emergency alert and response

The participant will also have the opportunity to network with subject matter experts across the agency to learn what CDC does for global public health emergencies.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 2019

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in public health, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
