What will I be doing?
Under the guidance of a mentor, you will engage in a community of scientists and researchers and experience project planning and management; strategic and scientific communications; environmental public participation requirements for National Environmental Policy Act and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act; Rehabilitation Act Section 508 compliance; and Plain Language Act requirements.
As a participant, you will receive training and gain experience and familiarity with a variety of environmental disciplines through environmental document review and editing. You will have the opportunity to apply your environmental knowledge and understanding of engineering and scientific principles and grow your skills to help modify and create environmental reports that are understandable to a variety of audiences and comply with environmental and communication related laws and policies. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas, including collaborating with U.S. Army civilian environmental professionals at the U.S. Army Environmental Command and Army installations worldwide to improve environmental documents prior to public release

What is the anticipated appointment start date?
The USAEC is ready to make appointments June 1, 2021. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the benefits?

Nature of Appointment
You will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Security Clearance (optional)
While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DoD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.
Completion of a successful background investigation by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is required for an applicant to be on-boarded at USAEC. OPM can complete a background investigation only for individuals, including non-US citizens, who have resided in the U.S. for the past three years.
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields listed below in disciplines. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Best candidates will be motivated individuals with strong environmental, organizational, communication, and research skills.
