Through an Educational Partnership Agreement with Appalachian State University, the APHC is seeking two participants to support a cardiorespiratory fitness testing project. Under the direction of mentors from both APHC and Appalachian State University, the participants will receive hands-on experience in conducting protocol validation activities related to an Army health promotion and wellness program. Activities include but are not limited to: collaborate with health education staff at two locations to implement an outdoor (i.e., field-based) and an indoor (i.e., treadmill-based) cardiorespiratory fitness testing protocol; collaborate with health education staff at two locations to collect cardiorespiratory fitness testing data in outdoor and indoor settings using COSMED's K5 fitness testing technology; managing, preparing, and analyzing data to validate data collected in outdoor settings with data collected in indoor settings; communicating data validation results to the sponsoring agency; and using validation results to inform the development of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Army Wellness Center (AWC) implementation of COSMED’s K5 fitness testing technology in outdoor settings. The participants will regularly collaborate with APHC project team members and their faculty mentor to define and shape project activities.
The benefits to the participant include the ability to learn about public health prevention and exercise testing approaches within the military, opportunities to apply and develop skills learned in the classroom within an applied setting (e.g., application of advanced exercise testing technology, literature review, database management, data analysis, and data reporting), opportunities to travel to various Army installations, and experience in translating scientific findings to inspire action.

Appointment Length
This appointment is a six month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by APHC. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
Additional Information
While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.
Potential participant must possess a strong understanding of exercise physiology, cardio-pulmonary exercise testing, data collection, analysis, and reporting in the context of public health, health promotion, and prevention.
A Bachelor or Master in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, or related degree required. Participants slated to receive their degrees within 3 months of application will be considered. Candidates with direct experience conducting and interpreting cardio-pulmonary exercise tests strongly preferred. Desirable skills include strong attention to detail, ability to operationalize ideas into concrete actions, strong interpersonal skills and written/oral communication skills, and intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills. Experience using quantitative (e.g., SPSS, SAS, R) software strongly preferred.
