Description

The Sensory Systems Branch is part of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. The Sensory Systems Branch leads the discovery, evaluation, and transition of revolutionary communication and display technologies that optimize warfighters’ tactical and strategic decision making, survivability, and lethality across the full range of battlespace environments. The project will focus on compiling, processing, and analyzing engineering and design data to ensure adequate literature research and documentation of technical projects. Special emphasis will be put on the production of technical documentation for securing Air Force intellectual property rights. The participant will gain practical experience working with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to explain and document complex state-of-the-art technology, practice technical writing skills, and learn to evaluate the patent-ability of novel technical projects.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a nine month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by AFRL. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

  • Training and Travel Allowance.

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.

Qualifications

Education and/or experience equivalent to bachelors degree in engineering, or other related field of science. Broad knowledge involving research techniques, technical writing, and project management are preferred.
